La humanitat coneix l’existència del canvi climàtic des de que el 1896 el científic suec Svante Arrhenius va preveure que un increment en la concentració de CO2 a l’atmosfera podria incrementar l’efecte hivernacle. Mentre la ciència avançava per buscar un consens sobre el vincle entre l’activitat humana i el canvi climàtic, les agencies multilaterals començaven a centrar els seus esforços en el tema. A nivell internacional, la primera Conferència de les Parts (COP) del Convenci Marc de Nacions Unides pel Canvi Climàtic es va portar a terme el 1995 a Berlín i va suposar el principi d’una era. Des de llavors, el canvi climàtic ha sigut una de les temàtiques que han despertat més interès científic, tensions geopolítiques i noves tendències econòmiques.
A dia d’avui, la problemàtica del canvi climàtic s’enfoca principalment des de la mitigació – coneguda també com descarbonització – i des de l’adaptació als riscos derivats de les conseqüències generades pels canvis en el clima. Ambdós línies d’actuació incorporen de forma inherent una vessant de riscos per a determinats sectors econòmics, ubicacions geogràfiques o tecnologies però alhora una oportunitat.
A la COP28 de Dubai es va acordar la necessitat de reduir les emissions de gasos d’efecte hivernacle un 43% pel 2030, un 60% a 2035 i aconseguir ser Zero Net al 2050 respecte les emissions de referència de 2019. En paral·lel es va acordar també triplicar l’energia renovable instal·lada i doblar el rati d’eficiència energètica a 2030. Aquests acords ens indiquen la necessitat urgent d’una transició accelerada a una economia descarbonitzada que asseguri operar en un entorn segur a nivell climàtic.
Els propers anys semblen destinats a una transició socioeconòmica accelerada i un increment en les afectacions físiques conseqüència del canvi climàtic.
Aquesta transició portarà a riscos i oportunitats en matèria (i) política-legal per canvis en normativa vinculada a l’emissió de GEI, litigació ambiental o limitacions a productes o serveis intensius en carboni. Per altre costat, també serem testimonis de (ii) canvis tecnològics vinculats a noves tecnologies de producció energètica, increment de l’eficiència d’equips, nous productes o serveis descarbonitzats i similar. En la mateixa línia s’espera un canvi en (iii) les tendències dels mercats per canvis de comportament dels compradors, increments en el cost de matèries primeres o canvis en la demanda. La manera com les empreses afrontin aquests canvis també pot suposar afectacions a nivell de (iv) reputació vinculades a preocupacions de clients, estigmatització de sectors o falta d’acció estratègica.
Si ens centrem en la part física del canvi climàtic és on podem observar riscos i oportunitats vinculades a les modificacions dels patrons meteorològics i climàtics globals i locals. En aquest sentit estem parlant d’increment en la freqüència i severitat d’esdeveniments extrems com sequeres, temporals, inundacions o similars. En paral·lel continuarem observant com els patrons de precipitació, temperatura o nivell del mar acceleren la seva tendència a allunyar-se de la mitjana i provoquen conseqüències greus per ecosistemes naturals, la base de la societat.
Com en qualsevol canvi, l’economia de mercat farà aflorar guanyadors i vençuts. S’erigiran com a guanyadors aquelles empreses que hagin sabut llegir el context de transició del mercat global i apostin per models de negoci descarbonitzats, resilient a riscos climàtics i que aprofitin els canvis polítics, legals, tecnològics i de mercat per posicionar-se positivament de cara a la nova economia. Fallaran als seus accionistes i parts interessades aquelles empreses que no adaptin la seva activitat a un context amb més vulnerabilitat operatives vinculades a menor disponibilitat d’aigua, major risc d’incendis o probabilitat d’inundació i no aconsegueixin transformar els seus actius per adaptar-se a una demanda de productes o servies baixos en emissions.
