ED-Elas2D: An Educational Program for Computer-aided Training in Structural Analysis Using the Finite Element Method

Abstract
In this paper, a methodology for computer-aided training of structural problems by the finite element method is presented. The resulting educational program, named ED-Elas2D, has been developed by a group of researchers at the School of Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona, UPC. The program combines the standard concept which appears in the traditional teaching of finite element methods for structural analysis, such as the introduction to the basic structural theory, data definition (pre-processor), description of the analysis procedure (processor) and interpretation of results (post-processor). The program is addressed to both students who enrol in the study on finite element methods and to academic and technical staff in universities and companies who wish to update their knowledge of finite element techniques. The educational program ED-Elas2D works in the Windows system and it is characterized by its interactivity and graphic utilities.

Abstract
Vulnerability of civil structures and systems under seismic actions have been extensively used and studied in the last decade. However, the goals of those studies are very diverse and it have caused some confusion on the meaning and definition of vulnerability. Naturally, different scopes of vulnerability lead to different methodologies in its study which may be incompatible. The present aim is to analyse the definition of seismic vulnerability in the framework of Bayesian decision making. Three different examples of decision making related to seismic vulnerability, which are qualitatively different, guide the discussion. They have an increasing complexity: decisions on normative seismic design; decisions on insurances against seismic risk and, finally, those decisions that should be taken to lead alarm, mitigation and rescue systems for seismic disasters. The three analised examples correspond to three different decision making schemes, respectively named: a priori, a posteriori and preposterior. In each case the definition of seismic vulnerability depends on the concept of considered utility (cost-benefit), on the involved random states and the scale in which the phenomena are to be considered. Most of the concepts associated with seismic vulnerability are reviewed through these three examples. A conclusion is that seismic vulnerability studies should consider the associated decision making problem. Simultaneously, the study of methodological and estimation aspects on vulnerability are remarked in order to improve both guidelines for seismic design and disaster mitigation.

Abstract
An automated approach to explore the fundamental properties of high-density pedestrian traffic is outlined. The framework operates on video or time lapse images captured from surveillance cameras. For pedestrian velocity extraction, the framework incorporates cross-correlation based Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) techniques. For pedestrian density estimation, the framework relies on the Machine Learning technique of the Boosted Regression Trees. The information collected from images in pixel coordinates are transformed to world coordinates with a pin-hole camera based projective transformation technique. The framework has been tested with high density crowd images acquired during the Muslim religious event, the Hajj. Accuracy and performance of the framework are reported.

El episodio pluviométrico del 10 de junio en Cataluña: un primer estudio hidrometeorológico

Abstract
En este artículo se estudia el episodio pluviométrico registrado el día 10 de junio de 2000 en Cataluña. En particular se analiza la lluvia caída en la cuenca de 97 km2 correspondiente a la riera de Magarola en su cruce con la autovía N-II en Esparreguera (Barcelona). Para ello se utiliza información de campo obtenida a partir de radar meteorológico, pluviómetros y pluviógrafos. Sobre la mayor parte de la cuenca se recogieron más de 150 mm de lluvia durante el episodio. También prácticamente sobre toda la cuenca cayeron más de 100 mm en dos horas. El cálculo del período de retorno asociado a la lluvia de 24 horas evidencia la naturaleza excepcional del fenómeno. No obstante la información histórica disponible es insuficiente y solo permite realizar estimaciones con una gran incertidumbre.

Abstract
Engineers have been dealing with deterioration in concrete structures since shortly after their initial use. Before 1980 deterioration was taken into consideration predominantly using rules of thumb developed through experience. After 1980 simple engineering models, such as Fick's law, the Hetek's model and time dependent models, were developed and became more widely used. With time these models, both deterministic and stochastic, are becoming increasingly more sophisticated and are increasingly based on "physical" parameters. This trend will continue and future models will be based even more so on the physical, chemical and mechanical laws and principles that govern material and structural behaviour.

Abstract
The use of agent-based models (ABMs) has increased in the last years to simulate social systems and, in particular, financial markets. ABMs of financial markets are usually validated by checking the ability of the model to reproduce a set of empirical stylised facts. However, other common-sense evidence is available which is often not taken into account, ending with models which are valid but not sensible. In this paper we present an ABM of a stock market which incorporates this type of common-sense evidence and implements realistic trading strategies based on practitioners literature. We next validate the model using a comprehensive approach consisting of four steps: assessment of face validity, sensitivity analysis, calibration and validation of model outputs.

Abstract
En los últimos años ha habido un gran número de crisis financieras con graves efectos en la economía de los países afectados. Para evitar o minimizar estos efectos negativos es necesario entender qué factores pueden desencadenar una crisis financiera. Sin embargo, la literatura sólo ofrece explicaciones de tipo cualitativo o modelos analíticos muy estilizados que resultan poco operativos. Proponemos en este artículo un modelo basado en agentes que permite estudiar, mediante simulación, los efectos agregados que emergen de la interacción de los inversores de un mercado financiero. Nuestro objetivo es analizar con este modelo la influencia en la dinámica de un mercado del uso generalizado de modelos basados en técnicas VaR de gestión de riesgo. Los resultados de la simulación corroboran la tesis que señala el uso homogéneo de estos modelos como uno de los factores que pueden inducir episodios de inestabilidad financiera.

Abstract
In this paper we present the basics of a novel methodology for the development of simulation-based and augmented learning tools in the context of applied science and engineering. It is based on the extensive use of model order reduction, and particularly, of the so-called Proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD) method. This method provides a sort of meta-modeling tool without the need for prior computer experiments that allows the user to obtain real-time response in the solution of complex engineering or physical problems. This real-time capability also allows for its implementation in deployed, touch-screen, handheld devices or even to be immersed into electronic textbooks. We explore here the basics of the proposed methodology and give examples on a few challenging applications never until now explored, up to our knowledge.

Abstract
In this article we present a review of the state of the art in mathematical e-learning and some personal experiences on this area developed during the last eleven years at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC), a completely online university located in Spain. The article discusses important aspects related to online mathematics courses offered in higher education programs, including: benefits and challenges, universities offering this type of education, methodological considerations, emergent technologies, learning projects and environments, etc. Also, key aspects of the UOC mathematical e-learning model and its historical evolution are described and analysed. Special attention is paid to mathematical curricula in computer sciences degrees, where a lot of work needs to be done in order to adapt mathematics courses to the continuously changing educational necessities of students. A curricula design proposal, based on a top-down approach, is presented as a best practice. Finally, some trends and future perspectives on the subject are suggested.

Abstract
La Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña ha sido pionera en la introducción de un modelo de evaluación docente plenamente adaptado a las exigencias del Espacio Europeo de Enseñanza Superior. Además, su sistema de evaluación de la actividad docente del profesorado ha sido homologa- do por la AQU y ANECA. Dicho modelo de evaluación docente se basa en las más recientes directrices europeas y tiene como fundamento diversos indicadores indirectos. Este modelo se ha empleado para evaluar la docencia del profesorado en cinco convocatorias. Durante este periodo de tiempo se ha acumulado una información valiosísima que permite obtener datos agregados no sólo de la calidad de los docentes sino, también, de diversas características inherentes al proceso de evaluación, así como de la bondad de los indicadores empleados. En este artículo se presentan es- tos datos y se muestra un conjunto de datos agregados que permiten estimar la bondad y fiabilidad del proceso de evaluación, así como su aceptación por el profesorado evaluado.

Abstract
Professor E. M. Alf Samuelsson from Chalmers University, Göteborg, Sweden, died on the 3rd of June 2005 at the age of 75 after a lengthy illness. Professor Samuelsson was an engineer with Professor Sven-Olof Asplund’s ConstructionCompany from 1952 to the time he joined Chalmers University in September 1954. In 1963 he completed his doctoral thesis with Professor Asplund on the subject of analysis of framedstructures by use of algebraic topology. He was beloved by students, colleagues and co-workersand was known as ‘Alf’ by all. Through his foresight and deep knowledge in many fields Alfcreated a strong group in Computational Mechanics at Chalmers University, which he led until his retirement in July 1994. Under his leadership the Department of Structural Mechanics flourished and has been widely recognized for its many scientific contributions. Alf supervised a large number of doctoral students of which nine have become professors. Alf was, formany years, the Dean of Research at Chalmers and has contributed much to the University’s development.

Abstract
El artículo revindica el valor de los métodos de cálculo que se enseñan en las Escuelas de Ingeniería, como herramientas indispensables en los nuevos sistemas de ayuda a la toma de decisiones (SAD). Los SAD integran base de datos, métodos de cálculo y módulos de inteligencia artificial, y su utilización se extiende cada día más para ayuda al diseño y gestión de infraestructuras y servicios de ingeniería. En el texto se describen varios desarrollos y aplicaciones recientes de SAD en ingeniería civil. El artículo acaba con una reflexión sobre los límites de los SAD. The paper stresses the value of the computational methods taught in engineering faculties as indispensable tools within the new decision support systems (DSS). The DSS integrate data bases, computational methods and artificial intelligence modules. They are increasingly used for supporting the design and management of civil constructions and services in engineering. The paper describes recent developments and applications of DSS in civil engineering. The text ends up with a discussion on the limits of the DSS.
