Abstract

A recent series of CPTU soundings in sensitive clay at the Louiseville Quebec test site has been published, allowing for the application of two closed-form analytical solutions based on: (1) effective stress limit plasticity and (2) hybrid cavity expansion-critical state methods. These are used for geoparameter interpretations including: effective stress friction angle, undrained shear strength, yield stress ratio, undrained rigidity index, and the coefficient of consolidation. Profiles of these soil parameters are compared with the benchmark values obtained from available series of previous and present laboratory testing programs at this site, including index testing, triaxial compression, and one-dimensional consolidation. Piezocone dissipation tests are used to assess the coefficient of consolidation which are validated by pressuremeter holding tests and lab oedometer tests. An empirical CPTU screening method identifies the Louiseville site as underlain by sensitive clay, versus a regular insensitive clay deposit, whereas soil behavior type charts using Q-F-Bq indicate the soils are either silt (zone 4) or regular clay (zone 3). The alternate screening method is verified by field vane and laboratory fall cone that show the clay is in fact sensitive (average St ≈ 22).

Abstract

Research has already demonstrated advantages in performing piezoball tests when compared to piezocone in estimating the soil undrained shear strength (Su) along the stratigraphy and remolded strength (Sur) through cyclic tests, showing a shorter range of strength correction factors (N) and lower dependence on the soil stiffness index (Ir). Another possible application is estimating the remolded shear strength directly from penetration (qin) and extraction (qext) measurements without requiring cyclic tests. This research performed piezocone, vane, and piezoball tests (standard and cyclic) in a soft soil deposit in southern Brazil. Additionally, undisturbed samples were collected for characterization. The in situ investigation resulted in cone and ball factors in accordance with the international practice recommendation, resulting in similar profiles of undrained strength Su which increases with depth from 3 to 14 kPa and constant values of remolded undrained strength Sur. Regarding estimating the Sur through direct measurements of penetration and extraction of the piezoball, it was necessary to carefully evaluate the time laps between probe insertion and extraction to avoid overestimating the remolded strength.

Abstract

The present paper aims to validate the applicability of a piezoball test equipped with pressure transducers at the probe’s tip, middle, and equator faces to estimate the coefficient consolidation behavior of a soft soil deposit. The proposals of Mahmoodzadeh et al. (2015) and Liu et al. (2023), derived from numerical solutions, can be adopted to estimate horizontal coefficients of consolidation (ch) through the piezoball dissipation measurements. The dissipations tests were performed at depths of 4, 6, 8, and 10 m and were conducted up to at least about 70% of dissipation of the excess pressure generated during the penetration, except for the test at a depth of 4m, done at 85%. Results were directly compared with piezocone, and the estimated values for the consolidation coefficient were similar for all methodologies applied, both at the face and equator positions.

Abstract

The presence of a non-liquefiable crust overlying a liquefiable layer plays a significant role in determining the occurrence of liquefaction damage, as originally formulated by Ishihara in 1985. Following the 2010-2011 Canterbury seismic sequence (New Zealand), almost no foundation deformation occurred in areas characterized by soils susceptible to liquefaction overlaid by at least 3 m-thick intact crust. In contrast, the 2012 Emilia-Romagna earthquake (Italy) provided evidence of liquefaction in silty-sandy layers below 3 to 9 m-thick crusts. Therefore, Ishihara’s approach and the variety of liquefaction severity indices need to be further tested to assess to what extent they can be considered reliable predictors of performance. This study aims at better understanding the role of non-liquefiable crusts in preventing damage to buildings and infrastructures. In this respect, in situ and laboratory tests were conducted at selected sites in EmiliaRomagna. The results of two case studies in Mirandola (Modena, Italy), which share similar soil profiles but exhibited different liquefaction evidences following the 2012 seismic sequence, are presented. Comprehensive geotechnical and geophysical surveys were performed at both the sites, by means of piezocone tests, seismic dilatometer tests, boreholes, laboratory tests, electrical resistivity tomography and multichannel analysis of surface waves. These surveys document the geotechnical and geophysical properties of the 5 m-thick non-liquefied (or potentially non-liquefiable) crust and of the liquefied (or potentially liquefiable) silty-sandy deposits. This effort is aimed at understanding how the surface layer properties contributed to the different behavior observed at the two sites during the earthquake events.
