Abstract

Two closely related aspects of the information and documentation sector -university education and labour market- are discussed. We consider the equivalencies and transferability of previous courses and degrees for credit towards the Information and Documentation degree, and some possible effects of the new three-year degrees. In relation to the labour market in our sector, we discuss the opacity of our contribution to the digital content economy. Summarized in tables, the most striking results of our analysis of employment and unemployment rates and types of job openings posted in information and documentation in 2014 are presented and discussed.

Abstract

Analysis of the status of the professions of librarian, documentalist and information scientis tin Spain, studying the influence of the curriculum in the labour market. Forty percent of employers believe that graduates should have more knowledge about specific sources of information: legal, economic, health, education, etc. The profession and its programme of studies are poorly understood by society, and the terminological inconsistency between degree titles, the field of knowledge and professional institutions contributes to this problem. The number of graduates in Spain reached its maximum in 2005 (1,727) and this amount has steadily declined, to 667 in 2012.

The main trends observed in the library and information science labour market and university education in 2012 have a general tone of survival with resignation. The economic crisis has caused many layoffs and left libraries without funds. New documents on professional ethics are mentioned. In the labour market, there is employment loss in the public sector. The decline in university enrolments that started in 2002 seems to have stopped and there has been a slight recovery with the new graduate title

Review of developments, changes and trends in radio, television, and online and print media in 2011. The strong impact of the economic crisis is discussed: unfortunately many newspapers have had to reduce staff, and a large number of journalists have been dismissed. The consequences of the general transition from paper to digital, and the new internet developments that day by day gain more audience and attract advertising are described. Statistics are provided.

Abstract

A review of various reports and studies reveals the most important aspects and events in 2014 of the library and information science (LIS) profession and academic programs. The economic crisis in Spain has continued to hit hard, although to a lesser extent. In this environment, a general major concern is to demonstrate the social benefits delivered by libraries. The profession is becoming more hybridized with other professional sectors. As for university education, we note a slight improvement in the statistical data, but also an outrageous structural reform of university cycles by the Spanish Ministry of Education. There has also been an unfair tightening of accreditation agency requirements for the approval of six-year research periods for academic researchers in LIS.

The explosion of social web platforms has triggered the emergence of a new professional profile called community manager.The opportunities for graduates in library sciences to have access to these jobs are analyzed, taking into account the skills demanded in the current job offers and how Spanish universities have integrated them in their curricula.

A study was designed to determine how the degree programs in Information and library science available in 2000-2005 at the public universities of Madrid fit the labour market needs of their students. The methodology used was the development of a questionnaire addressed to graduates. Although the number of surveys completed is not high (118), the authors believe that the results obtained permit a series of conclusions that may be extrapolated to the entire cohort.

Abstract

The article presents the results of a survey on working life, answered by 183 graduates in Information Science studies of the Universidad de Zaragoza, between the years 1992 and 2006. The results can be summarized in that these professionals improve their academic results with respect to other previous studies due to their motivation throughout the studies. The expectations for job access of these graduates have been fulfilled in most of the cases, and they spent an average of thirteen months looking for a job. A great part of these workers are employed in specific functions of Information Science. Nevertheless, most of them don’t belong to any Professional Association of Information Sciences. In spite of this, we can conclude that these studies must be better known in order to show everybody what opportunities are available to these professionals.

L’estudi de la qualitat dels llocs de treball està prenent cada cop més rellevància. Organismes com l’OIT, l’Eurofound o l’OCDE ja complementen l’anàlisi quantitativa del mercat de treball amb l’estudi sobre la qualitat dels llocs de treball. Aquest estudi utilitza l’Enquesta de qualitat i condicions de treball a Catalunya realitzada pel Departament d’Empresa i Treball (EQCT 2021), per aprofundir en l’anàlisi de la qualitat del treball des d’un punt de vista multidimensional. Mitjançant l’anàlisi tipològic no jeràrquic (k-means) es du a terme un exercici exploratori en què es defineixen grups homogenis de llocs de treball en funció de la seva qualitat en diferents dimensions: ambient físic, intensitat en el treball, qualitat del temps de treball, ambient social, habilitats, participació i formació, perspectives professionals i salari. L’anàlisi se centra en els llocs de treball assalariats, pels qual es disposa d’una mostra de 2.490 elements. S’han establert 5 grups o clústers de llocs de treball: treballs de qualitat superior, treballs de qualitat i intensitat alta, treballs manuals, treballs intermitents i treballs precaris. A més a més, s’han fet servir altres variables de l’enquesta per caracteritzar els grups obtinguts segons el lloc de treball i la persona que l’ocupa, el que mostra diferències importants de gènere, nivell d’estudis, qualificació de llocs de treball, antiguitat, ocupació o activitat econòmica, entre altres. Finalment, també s’han caracteritzat els grups segons els efectes que té el treball en la vida de les persones, com la salut física i mental, l’equilibri entre vida laboral i personal o les privacions materials.

 

Dels resultats obtinguts se’n destaca la identificació de dos grups amb qualitat contraposada: els de treballs de qualitat superior, amb valors per sobre de la mitjana en totes les dimensions i els de treballs precaris amb una qualitat per sota de la mitjana en totes les dimensions. Altrament, la segmentació dels treballadors revela una major representació femenina en els grups amb pitjors condicions laborals i que la presència del teletreball es vincula amb els grups de millor qualitat. A més, els resultats posen de manifest la rellevància dels estudis superiors: passar d’estudis primaris a mitjans no sembla suficient per poder fer un salt de la mateixa magnitud en la qualitat del treball, mentre que assolir uns estudis superiors sí ho permet. Les conclusions pretenen aportar una discussió sobre polítiques públiques o accions empresarials que puguin millorar la qualitat dels llocs de treball a Catalunya. Es revela la necessitat de continuar apostant per polítiques d’igualtat de gènere; pel foment de la formació continuada de la força de treball; millores en protocols i processos davant l’assetjament laboral, i donar més suport als treballadors davant les càrregues físiques i mentals de la feina i els seus efectes sobre la salut, un aspecte crucial per a la qualitat dels llocs de treball.
