Abstract

L’aprenentatge de la soledat (Learning to Be Alone), by the Catalan author David Vilaseca (2008), raises issues about writing, identity and sexuality. Drawing on cultural theory, psychoanalysis and queer theory, the narrator and protagonist, David —the author’s alter ego— writes a journal to shape his gay identity. Rather than proclaiming homosexuality, autobiography retrospectively shapes the self’s sexual identity. Vilaseca renders the story as fiction, not as an authentic personal diary, whereupon the novel is an example of self-fiction, but also a mixture of theory and personal experience. Specifically, psychoanalysis shapes the character as a depressed, paranoiac, masochist, reliant subject who feels terribly guilty and has a very complex relationship to his heterosexual past. The protagonist links his former life to an identity he no longer recognises —Catalonia, his friends, his family and, most remarkably, his mother. His becoming a gay man is achieved through the interaction with London’s gay scene and demands breaking with the past, which David seems unable to overcome; his incapability transforms him into a melancholic subject.

Abstract

The rationale of road-pricing schemes is to reduce the negative externalities of road traffic by increasing costs to decrease demand. Although in the transportation literature this is a well-acknowledged means of relieving cities from congestion, only few cities have introduced such schemes so far. One of the most notable examples in Europe is London’s congestion charge. Motorists entering London’s city center are required to pay a fixed levy during working hours. The revenue generated by this levy is partly dedicated to improvements of the public transport system. The benefits of this congestion charge have only been analyzed from an economic perspective without reference to its impact on macroscopic traffic indicators. The recently introduced macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) and its extension to multimodal traffic, the 3D-MFD, offer a novel framework to address this gap."br" In this paper, we analyze the performance of London’s overground traffic with the empirical 3D-MFD covering both car traffic and buses. Data is acquired from loop detectors (for car traffic) and automated vehicle location devices (for buses).

Abstract

The role of governments in the regulation of potentially beneficial low carbon practices, such as car sharing, has proved difficult, as there are many different actors involved and as existing practices can be undermined. The mobility sector provides clear evidence of these dilemmas, as a wide range of users need to be engaged in the discourse over the innovations, and as existing governance structures may be unsuitable for addressing both the opportunities and limitations of innovation. This paper focuses on the sustainability implications of shared mobility and the need for new approaches to governance. A qualitative study of car sharing in London is used to examine the ideas, incentives, and institutions of the key actors involved in this sharing sector. The elements of change and continuity in the emerging sharing economy indicate the different possibilities for enhancing sustainable mobility. Any search for an alternative governance regime should take account of the ideational factors that would require an understanding of the different incentives needed to accommodate the full range of actors involved with the sharing economy.
