This paper presents different variational formulations for the modeling of damage in solids by the embedded discontinuity formulation. Initially the energy functional, for a continuum medium, if presented from which; the displacement and mixed strain-displacement formulations, of the finite element method, are developed for a solid where the damage is modeled as a discontinuity. To validate the theoretical consistency of the developed formulations, a numerical example is presented. Comments and conclusions, derived from this study, are given at the end of the paper.
