• Integrated nano-enabled heaters for automotive composite panels to enable external airbag activation

  Abstract

  OASIS Composites Open Innovation Test Bed (OITB) is a single-entry point for scale-up of Innovative Smart lightweight polymer matrix and aluminium composite materials and components. OASIS offers technological and business support services for accelerated innovation studies and success in industrialisation, market penetration and commercialisation of nano-enabled products (NEPs). IGESTEK (Spain) is a leading company in the development of technology projects: specialized in lightweight solutions using plastics and composite materials. In collaboration with Tecnalia (Spain), IPC (France), University of Patras (Greece), UCLM (Spain), TMBK (Poland) and AMIRES (Czech Republic) they identified an opportunity for the development of a heating system based on buckypapers (MWCNT films) for automotive exterior bodywork panels manufactured using recyclable thermoplastic composite material via a press moulding method. Heater integration was screened using resistive heating, simple mechanical and microscopy analysis of the test panels. Coupon panels were manufactured (using optimised processing conditions) for thermal analysis. A prototype mould was designed and manufactured for the fabrication of representative demonstrator parts (1:3 scale car bonnet panel). Electrothermal analyses of four heater configurations were calculated, leading to the selection of two final demonstrator configurations. Ten functioning demonstrator panels were successfully manufactured based on these two designs. Thermal assessment of the integrity of the heaters was carried out via electrical resistive heating. The results of the collaboration confirmed that NEP based thin film heaters could successfully be integrated into thermoplastic composite panels via a compression thermoforming process.

• Metallic composite material to protect against high-velocity projectiles and high energy impacts

  Abstract

  The catastrophic failure of structures due to the impact of high energy waves or high speed projectiles can occur in a wide range of situations, including ballast impacts on high speed trains, manmade terrorist acts or accidental industrial events. High energy absorbing materials are therefore essential for the protection of both the hardware as well as personnel. One common requirement in all applications is the development of materials with reduced weight whilst guaranteeing high energy absorption levels. The aim of this work has been the investigation of lighter weight metallic composite systems with suitable properties aimed primarily at withstanding high-velocity projectiles and high energy impacts. (E≈ 100 J or v ≈ 120 m/s). Metallic hybrid test panels have been designed and manufactured using both aluminum and aluminum foam layers. To evaluate their efficiency in the case of a high energy impact the panels have been tested under simulated high-velocity projectile impact conditions by means of a pneumatic air cannon.. The tested panels have been assessed using visual inspection as well as X-ray tomography and IR thermography. The panel deformation as well as the delamination between structural layers has been assessed for the different proposed solutions.

  Abstract

  The need to improve non-intrinsic properties of composite materials is a fact that leads to studies such as the one carried out in this project, where the possibility of integrating new materials development into common materials is analyzed to provide them with an improved properties: mechanical or electric. The main objective of the project is to analyze the possibility of introducing the new materials into the current manufacturing processes, improving the properties of the raw material (dry carbon fiber fabric infused with monocomponent epoxy resin), under aeronautical requirements. Two material developments are made with carbon nanotubes in two different formats: buckypapers and thermoplastic doped veils. The implementation of each materials has been studied in current infusion processes, more concretely manufacturing processes by RTM (Resin Transfer Molding). The studied possibilities are: buckypapers incorporated in dry preforms, for their subsequent infusion and doped veils embedded in dry preforms, for their subsequent infusion. The obtained results at this moment (2nd year of the project) are satisfactory, although it´s necessary to optimize the materials to improve the automation of the manufacturing process and achieve a greater improvement of properties.
