Digitization plays a fundamental role in facilitating the transition to a circular and resource-efficient economy. The circular economy (and common sense) asks us to manage efficiently the (few) resources we have. But we need data, data that currently is not easily accessible or not accessible at all; and all this in a “data period”, in which everyone is talking about open data access....resources are the exception.
In this communication we want to highlight the importance of data for an efficient and sustainable wasted resources management in a territory through industrial symbiosis. And we will do it through several examples of mapping business opportunities based on these wasted resources, through SYNER program, explaining how companies can match (synergies) through their wasted resources through codification and mathematical algorithms based on successful cases and data management.
It is necessary to generate quality data in a discrete (not aggregated) form to provide information where real data is not available. Only this way we can dentify and quantify industrial and agricultural waste that can potentially be turned into resources through industrial symbiosis, and identify with whom.
These "maps" of surplus resource flows become the starting information that every industrial symbiosis territorial project should have in order to have the systemic vision necessary to make strategic decisions towards sustainable development.
