Abstract

In a global context of raising urbanization rates, the study of land use and land cover changes (LULCC) has gained growing importance. This research aims to investigate the relationship between LULCC, economic activity and transportation infrastructure networks (TINs) in Catalonia from 2006 to 2018 at municipal level. Economic development, land use transformation, and transportation planning are deeply interconnected, requiring strategies that balance the urban needs with environmental conservation. Theoretical models illustrate these dynamic relationships between economic activities and land use, influenced by socioeconomic factors like population growth and political landscapes. Using a rich dataset that includes satellite images and open-source data, our study will examine how advances in transportation infrastructure and industrial development have accelerated urban growth. The results will highlight the critical need for strategic land-use allocation aimed at fostering sustainable development and addressing the economic drivers behind land use changes. The study will propose a comprehensive framework for future research into sustainable land-use practices, arguing for a balanced strategy that prioritizes both economic growth and environmental conservation. It will intend to assist policymakers and researchers in developing strategies to promote sustainable development while effectively addressing modern urban environment challenges.
