Abstract

two-lane cellular automaton model is developed to investigate the effects of variable speed limit (VSL) control strategy on alleviating accident induced congestion and improving traffic efficiency. The impact of accident duration on traffic dynamics are analyzed by counting the downstream discharge flow rates and drawing the spatial-temporal diagram. The effectiveness of VSL control strategy is then investigated. The simulation results indicate that the longer the accident duration, the more serious the traffic congestion and the lower the system discharge flow rates are; with appropriate speed limit value and speed limit region length, traffic congestion induced by accident can be alleviated and even the system discharge flow can be increased in some extend.
