From Chess to StarCraft. A Comparative Analysis of Traditional Games and Videogames

==== Abstract ====

From their historical origins games have provided us with dramatic models of the fundamental activities of humankind, such as sowing and harvesting (mancala games), war (chess) and construction (puzzles). However, games based on the same activity change significantly depending on the place and time they belong to, and therefore a comparative analysis between traditional games and videogames can give us a valuable and novel insight into the popular culture of our times. What are the main distinctive features used to represent war in military strategy videogames compared to those used in chess? What are the main differences between the most popular videoludic metaphors of construction and traditional puzzles? The aim of this article is to explore questions like these by making a comparative analysis of the underlying meanings of traditional games and popular videogames. The theoretical and methodological framework is based on game history, game design theory and theory of videogame meaning. The findings reveal elements that shed light on the nuances of meaning that distinguish traditional games from popular videogames of the same genre, and show that the analysis model conceived for this study could be of interest for further research. Finally, we reflect on the relationship between the underlying meanings of the videogames analyzed and certain distinctive aspects of contemporary culture.

==== 1. Introduction ====

1.1. Approach

In the mid-1960s, football began to supersede baseball as the most popular sport in the United States. Marshall McLuhan reflected on this phenomenon in a passage from «Understanding Media» (1964: 208-212). According to McLuhan, the public's change in preference could be explained by a cultural shift. He pointed out that baseball is a positional game played in turns, and the players' positions and functions follow a clear hierarchy; thus, it is more in accordance with the tastes of an industrial society. However, football is a more decentralized and fluid game and the players don't play such fixed roles, which seems to be more in line with contemporary society. McLuhan's key idea in this short reflection was that games are dramatic models of fundamental questions in our psychological life, and as such constitute cultural reflections or reactions that are closely related to the society in which they have arisen or the one in which they have become popular (McLuhan, 1964: 208-209) (Egenfeldt-Nielsen, Heide-Smith & Tosca: 2008: 28-29).

This idea of McLuhan's is in tune with the pioneering anthropological and sociological theories about games developed by Huizinga (1998) and Caillois (2001); however, despite the valuable intuitions of these researchers the study of popular games as expressive phenomena with deep cultural roots did not start to take shape until the consolidation of the videogame industry in the 1990s in books such as «Video Kids: making sense of Nintendo» (Provenzo, 1991) and «Hamlet on the Holodeck» (Murray, 1997).

More recently, a theory of videogame meaning has been gradually taking shape in doctoral theses and research works such as those by Frasca (2001; 2003; 2007; 2009), Sicart (2003; 2009a; 2009b), Salen and Zimmerman (2004), Maietti (2004; 2008), Bogost (2006), Ruiz-Collantes (2009) and Pérez-Latorre (2010), who have contributed various analysis tools for exploring the relation between ludic structures (game rules, strategic structures, gameplay dynamics) and the discursive potential of videogames, keeping the focus on the ludic dimension. This means taking the ludic structures as the central elements of the videogame language and leaving the narrative and audiovisual aesthetics more in the background as non-specific compositional layers of the videogame that are less distinctive of the medium.

Within this theoretical framework, the aim of this article is to make a comparative analysis of the meaning of traditional games and popular videogames. The basic hypothesis that underlies this work proposes taking up McLuhan's intuitions once again: there are deep relations between popular games and the culture and era of which these form a part, which can be revealed through an analysis of game meaning.

1.2. Universal game mechanics

In this text we present four comparative analyses of traditional games and videogames that represent the same sort of reoccurring game activity, a «game mechanic» in game design jargon. More specifically, a central game mechanic («core mechanic») is an action or combination of actions that the player (or the character/player in the case of videogames) performs repeatedly to provoke changes in the game state and achieve goals (for an in-depth revision of the «game mechanics» concept see Sicart, 2008).

Based on the work of game historians collected and updated by Parlett (1999), it is possible to identify four universal game mechanics in board games that have survived throughout history and that have always been present in games from different places and cultures (Parlett, 1999: 8-9). These universal game mechanics are: picking up/collecting; catching/hunting; configuration; physical skill/racing.

Picking up and collecting is a game mechanic that is represented in the traditional African family of games called mancala (an ancestral representation of sowing and harvesting), and also in games in which players search for «treasure», following clues that have been planted around the house or garden. Hunting and capturing is the game mechanic of classic strategy games such as chess and checkers, hide and seek, and also marksmanship games such as some ball games, slingshot and darts. Configuration is the game mechanic characterized by puzzles, tangram, naughts and crosses, solitaire, and «Connect four», as well as riddles, because in this type of game players need to combine (coordinate, configure) a series of clues in order to discover the hidden information. Finally, physical skill/racing is the game mechanic characteristic of games of athletic skill, rhythm and physical ability, such as hopscotch, skipping and sack races, as well as boardgames that represent races through dice rolls, such as backgammon and parcheesi.

These universal game mechanics can be considered to correspond to certain fundamental activities for the survival and development of humankind (Parlett, 1999: 8):

• Picking up and collecting corresponds to harvesting and stockpiling food and goods: looking for fruit, harvesting crops, fishing, etc.

• Catching corresponds to hunting and war: hunting animals and confronting enemies, eliminating them or being eliminated.

• Configuration corresponds to building and construction: inventing and putting together useful tools as well as constructing houses or other types of buildings.

• Physical skill/racing corresponds to agility: running, jumping, balancing, etc., which is also indispensable for the survival and development of humankind.

In this research we will examine the most significant contrasts between traditional games and certain popular videogames in terms of the representation (indirect, implicit) of stockpiling food, hunting/fighting in wars, building and physical exercise.

====2. Method====

The traditional games and videogames compared in this research all have a particularly clear and relevant centrality in one of the game mechanics defined above. We chose games that have remained popular through the ages and videogames with phenomenal commercial success. The games and videogames we contrasted belong to the same game genre (and have a particular «family air» in the terms of Wittgenstein), for example chess is compared with a military strategy videogame and not a «shooter» videogame. Therefore:

• For the representation of stockpiling food we compared the traditional mancala games with the videogames «Pac-Man» and «Katamari Damacy».

• For the representation of war we compared chess with the videogame «StarCraft».

• For the representation of building we compared traditional jigsaw puzzles with the videogame «Tetris».

• For the representation of athletic activity we compared the game hopscotch with videogames from the Wii game console.

To keep the comparative study consistent, we applied the same analysis variables to all the games and videogames considered. We used seven analysis variables taken and adapted from the doctoral thesis «Analysis of the Meaning of Videogames» (Pérez-Latorre, 2010). According to this previous research, an activity represented in a game or videogame acquires certain nuances of meaning basically in function of the following aspects:

1) Actions that make up the activity. The meaning of the main activities in this study (stockpiling food, hunting, warring, building, athletic skill) can vary substantially based on the (micro)actions that compose them in the game or videogame. For example, depending on the game the activity of «stockpiling food» could include different (micro)actions, such as cultivating, searching, fishing, stealing, etc.

2) Activity-function relations. The meaning of an action or activity in the game depends greatly on the function attached to it. Using a hammer has a very different meaning depending on whether it has the function/effect of «breaking glass» or that of «building a house». In this sense, we can see that the same action or activity can have different functions/effects in videogames compared to traditional games, and thus project very different meanings.

3) Conditions for performing the action (in the «real» plane). A game action or activity will also gain a particular nuance of meaning depending on the main conditions for success the player needs to comply with in order to fulfill their functions in the game (we are referring here to the player’s «real» actions and not actions represented on the screen). For example, the meaning of «hunting» in a game/videogame is very different depending on whether it requires the player to use their analytical and reflective skills or their observational powers and reflexes.

4) Shifts in the game experience towards redundancy versus variability. A game experience to obtain a certain objective can be represented as the only way (redundant) to reach that objective or as one possible alternative in the game from among many others. This also projects certain shades of meaning onto the action/activity in question, as we will see.

5) Opportunities and risks. The actions in strategy (video)games in particular gain meaning in relation to the combination of risks and opportunities associated with them. For example, the offensive strategy in soccer is associated with the opportunity to conquer «enemy territory» but at the risk of leaving your own «home» unprotected, and the inverse in the defensive strategy.

6) Subject versus environment. A key facet of the meaning of games is related to the dialectics between «assimilation» and «accommodation» that Jean Piaget established in his psychology of learning (see e.g., Piaget & Inhelder, 2007), which relates to the tensions involved in finding the right balance between personal will and adapting to the surrounding environment. For example, the representation of «social life» in doll-house games has a sweet, idyllic tone due to the high level of control the player has over the development of the game according to their personal wishes (assimilation), which contrasts with the imperative need in sport to adapt to outside circumstances (accommodation), such as rules that impose rigid limitations, the presence of rival players, the need to compete, etc.

7) Field of action. Finally, the meaning of a certain action/activity can also vary substantially depending on the type of space where it is carried out: the shape of the «game field».

The following are the most significant results obtained from the research. Instead of describing how the variables have been applied in each case analyzed, we focus on those that are most relevant in each case; those that shed most light on the essential distinguishing aspects of the meaning of traditional games and videogames.

====3. Main analysis results====

3.1. Representation of stockpiling food: Mancala versus «Pac-Man» and «Katamari Damacy»

The seed sowing game or «mancala» is the most popular traditional game in Africa and parts of the Middle East and Asia (Southeast and Central Asia), and there are historical records of this family of games from the 6th and 7th centuries A.D. (Comas, 2005: 30). The mancala game that is played most in Europe is called «awalé». Symbolically it is a representation of agricultural sowing and harvesting. The game is played on a game board with two rows of pits. A certain number of counters (seeds, pebbles, beans) are placed in each pit. The players take turns to «sow» the seeds by moving seeds one at a time into the following pits sequentially. If the last seed in the move lands in an opponent's pit and makes a total of two or three seeds in that pit, this player can pick them up and keep them: they have harvested a crop. The player's goal is to harvest as many seeds as possible.

In the world of videogames, one particular Japanese company, Namco, has created the two videogames that are the clearest metaphors of stockpiling food: the popular «Pac-Man» (1980) and the cult videogame «Katamari Damacy» (1998). As we all know, the «Pac-Man» videogame consists in the character/player moving around a series of mazes trying to eat all the pac-dots in each level and at the same time avoid the enemy ghosts. «Katamari Damacy», on the other hand, the extravagant successor of «Pac-Man» in contemporary videogames, is a surreal «simulator» of a dung beetle: the player controls what is initially a small ball, onto which they need to progressively attach as many objects as possible and make the ball grow to a certain diameter as they move through everyday environments such as houses, gardens, city streets, etc.

There is a fundamental difference in the meaning of «awalé» and that of its main videoludic heirs in relation to the (micro)actions that make up the metaphoric activity of stockpiling food. In awalé this activity is represented as a process that extends from «sowing» to «harvesting» the crop: after making some calculations, the player sows some seeds and then harvests the crop. However, in «Pac-Man» and «Katamari Damacy» stockpiling food is not represented as a progressive organic development, but rather the opposite, as the player only participates in the very last part of this process: consuming.

In addition, a characteristic of awalé is that the seeds are continually passed from one player to the other. However, in «Pac-Man» and «Katamari Damacy» the elements that the character/player harvests belong to «others» or to «nobody», and there is no process of exchange or alternation in the possession of objects as occurs in awalé.

In awalé, making calculations is a fundamental condition for success, as well as having a balanced crop, since to be able to harvest a crop, the pit cannot be empty or have only one seed, and nor can it be too full (with more than three seeds). «Pac-Man» and «Katamari Damacy» are also very different in this respect. In both, speed takes the place of making calculations as the fundamental condition for success: Pac-Man must skilfully race through the mazes to avoid being trapped by the ghosts, and the protagonist of «Katamari» has a certain time limit in each level for their ball to reach the necessary size, a Sword of Damocles that stamps a stressing rhythm onto the game experience. Likewise, instead of the quantitative equilibrium of awalé, the Namco videogames endorse unlimited accumulation, whether it be pac-dots («Pac-Man») or objects («Katamari»). Both videogames can be considered popular culture symbols of compulsive consumerism, reaching the level of surrealistic hyperbole in the case of «Katamari Damacy», in which the player can end up trying to «consume» telephone boxes, trucks and buildings.

The most significant contrast in the degree of variability in the game experience is between awalé and «Katamari Damacy». While awalé follows an essentially redundant and ordered dynamic in which the sequences of making calculations, sowing and harvesting are repeated in a similar, systematic way, «Katamari» is characterized by a gameplay that is unpredictable, fluid and always surprising. This is because the objects the player can harvest in «Katamari» (from hamburgers to dogs and ice creams to fire extinguishers) are randomly scattered in the game landscape, and there is no set path to follow to harvest them. This harvesting style seems to evoke the contemporary experience of our daily harvesting/consuming in the digital era. With the almost unlimited capacity of our digital «warehouses» and «shelves», who can resist relaxing their selective criteria a bit in the harvesting experience? In this sense, «Katamari Damacy» is to a certain degree a fun ludic parody of the new style of harvesting in the digital era.

Finally, if there is a similarity between the three games it is the limited diversity of the types of actions the character/player can perform: calculate, sow and harvest, in one case, and move/race and take/consume in the two videogames. However, while in awalé this seems to transmit/foster a certain constancy and methodical attitude, the general tone of the Namco videogames seems to express obsession and «monomania», evoking the idea of a consumer fever.

3.2. Representation of war: Chess versus «StarCraft»

It is difficult to say something about chess that has not been said before on innumerable occasions. It is one of the great universal references of popular culture, and originated from the Indian 7th century game Chaturanga. But maybe we can still discover something more in the metaphoric identity of the game if we compare it to one of its most popular successors in the videogame world: the science fiction military strategy videogame «StarCraft» (Blizzard, 1998), one of the best-selling videogames for personal computers in history.

The game is set in the 26th century, when three races from different planets fight for survival and supremacy of the universe: the Terrans, humans exiled from the Earth, the Zerg, an insectoid race, and the Protoss, a humanoid people with highly developed technology and extraordinary psionic capacities. Taking control of one of these races the player attempts to reach different levels in the strategic game.

An essential condition for success in «StarCraft» is the necessity for speed. «StarCraft» was one of the videogames that popularized real-time strategy games, in which the «noble» but also «rigid» image of war in turns, characteristic of chess, disappears, and speed in decision-making and taking action is almost as important as the actual tactical/strategic plans.

The actions which constitute the war in chess represent a face-to-face, direct and honorable battle between two armies, which takes place in a kind of idealized «bubble» in which no element that is external or parallel to the battle is considered. Conversely, in «StarCraft» the war becomes something more than a battle: to be victorious it is essential to control and intelligently exploit the deposits of the last remaining natural resources in the galaxy: «kristalis» minerals and «vespene gas».

Thus, the strategy in «StarCraft» is as much about dominating and controlling the energy sources that appear scattered on each game map as it is about the battles. What appears to be simply a means to an end (controlling minerals and «vespene» gas) may actually be the key purpose of the game. This typically videoludic characteristic of the strategic war game is not part of chess, and clearly has interesting connections with the contemporary world, in which control over energy sources such as petroleum has become the cornerstone for understanding the new wars.

In addition to the fight for domination over the natural energy resources, «StarCraft» is also characterized by other actions that go beyond the pure combat moves of chess: spy tactics to obtain information and the race to develop technology.

Chess is the paradigm of games of «perfect information», in which all the information is available to all the players in conditions of equality. In «StarCraft», however, this is very different: the player cannot broaden their range of vision in the game field until they have carried out explorations or launched spy ships to try to gain information advantages over their rivals. Thus, backstabbing becomes part of the game. This is totally unlike the informative transparency of chess, in which although the opponents obviously try to surprise each other, their cards are always on the table.

In «StarCraft» there is also a race to develop technology, and it is crucial for success to upgrade buildings and the soldiers' equipment.

Finally, the idealized equality in chess of the potential of the opposing armies is completely subverted in «StarCraft». In the Blizzard videogame, the player who controls the most natural resource deposits and who is able to exploit them most skilfully can build a far more powerful army than their opponents. Sometimes the battles in «StarCraft» have a clearly foreseeable outcome: an army can be so powerful that it can crush another army in a matter of seconds. On these occasions strategic ability (in the battle) becomes almost ridiculous. It does not matter how good an army general the player is, they cannot even face their enemies until they have understood that the war in «StarCraft» is also, and most importantly, fought in other areas, in the control of the energy sources, information access and the race for technological evolution.

The true war in «StarCraft» effectively takes place before and away from the battlefield, in fact where it is usually said that contemporary wars are fought.

3.3. Representation of building: jigsaw puzzles versus «Tetris»

Although people have played with jigsaw puzzles since the beginning of the 20th century, they were first manufactured in series when they began to be used for educational purposes (to teach geography in British schools) around 1962. Twenty years later, in 1985, the electronic game «Tetris», designed and programmed by the Russian computer scientist Alexey Pajitnov, revolutionized the concept of the jigsaw puzzle in the collective imagination.

In their discursive projections, the traditional jigsaw puzzle and «Tetris» differ from the very outset in the first steps of the game: in jigsaw puzzles, the player picks up the pieces that they want and begins fitting them together without any pressure; the builder in «Tetris», however, is in a non-stop world without choices, as the pieces never stop falling in an incessant rain from the top of the screen. The player cannot choose which pieces they would prefer to fit into place, the only alternative is to try to delay the inevitable arrival of chaos as long as possible.

Another vital difference between the two games lies in the definition of the objective. For the jigsaw puzzle, completing the one possible construction/image means success, but in «Tetris» there is no one single construction that is equivalent to victory and the pieces do not form a predefined image. Therefore, there is a clear contrast between the construction understood as a great, unique work, in traditional puzzles, and the construction understood as multiple works that incessantly and almost unavoidably supersede each other, in «Tetris». This also represents a contrast between the «romanticism» of the jigsaw puzzle and a certain «tragic realism» of «Tetris», for which the jigsaw puzzle's dream of a final perfect order is a utopia and the player can only try to forestall chaos.

This divergence between «romanticism» and «tragic realism» is accentuated by the fact that the person doing a jigsaw controls the time factor, while in «Tetris» the pieces fall faster and faster so that the player must adapt quickly to the external condition of a time limit.

Unlike in jigsaw puzzles, constructing in «Tetris» is not represented as an activity controlled by humankind (the player), but rather as an unbridled force that advances at its own will, a limit situation that can only be alleviated briefly.

The main condition for success in «Tetris» is to put off the arrival of chaos, and thus the player is constantly trying to slow down the growth of the constructions before the highest point touches the top limit of the screen, in which case the player would lose the game. This suggests an ideal of sustainable growth.

Finally, the two games also differ in the role visual perception plays as a condition for success. In jigsaw puzzles detailed observation has an essential value; however, in «Tetris» detailed vision is not relevant. The recognition of abstract structural patterns is what commands the most attention in the player's visual experience in the videogame. This could be associated with an underlying dialectic between a global vision that is also abstract («Tetris») versus a local vision that is closer to empirical reality (in jigsaw puzzles).

3.4. Representation of athletic activity: Hopscotch versus Wii

There are many traditional children's games that encourage physical exercise and the development of skills without actually involving chasing and catching. These are games of athletic, perceptive and rhythmic skills such as sack races, skipping and hopscotch.

If there is one videogame design company that has been interested in taking these types of traditional games from the street to inside our homes it is Nintendo, specifically with the Wii game console, with videogames like «Wii Sports» (Nintendo, 2006), «Wii Play» (Nintendo, 2006) and «Mario Kart Wii» (Nintendo, 2008).

Evidently the change in context, from outside to inside, leads to a certain attenuation of physical ability as the key condition for success and an accentuation of the player's perceptive agility and reflexes as metaphoric activities of the physical effort of the character who represents the player on the screen («avatar»).

However, the integration of physical activity into videogames has allowed it to enter worlds full of variability and surprises and leave the everyday places where traditional physical skill games are played: the streets and parks. Thus, the games of the physical skill mechanic have penetrated the territory of fantasy and been released from «realism».

There are two emblematic characteristics in the Wii videogame design that should be highlighted: transparent learning and dynamic adjustment of the difficulty. In the first case, learning the game rules is made easier due to the player's intuitive understanding of how to handle the Wii Remote, an interface that can be used very freely since it has movement sensors. In the second case, a game-difficulty design model automatically moulds the level of difficulty to the player based on the ability they show (Salen & Zimmerman, 2004: 222-223). These two Wii design characteristics together evoke an idealized and to a certain degree pleasurable/hedonist representation of physical/athletic exercise. Clearly, children playing traditional games, like hopscotch, sack races and skateboarding, have to adapt to the inflexible rules, the unchangeable characteristics of the game field and inevitable rivalries without depending on an automatic adjustment of the level of difficulty or other such design elements.

Finally, we need to add that the popular physical/perceptive skill games of the Wii console are strongly promoted to be played in groups, together with the whole family or with friends, through a marketing line called «party games» (e.g., «Mario Party 8», Hudson, 2007). As these games are designed to be played with others, playing alone is moved to the background in favor of a more festive feel for the physical skill game mechanic.

====4. Final considerations (Discussion)====

It is perhaps not strange to observe that contemporary culture, essentially Western society, is characterized by distinctive traits such as compulsive buying, amassing wealth, completing tasks very quickly, stress, fluidity over rigid orders, prioritizing results over the process, conflicts for the control of the world's energy sources, formidable technological development, the key importance of information and access to it, the multiplication of buildings and out-of-control urban growth, the problem of sustainable environmental management, a «global» but also more «abstract» vision of reality, and a sedentary lifestyle. What could seem surprising, however, is the extent to which these values are represented in the most popular videogames of our times, and in fact constitute their main distinctive characteristics in comparison to their game ancestors: board games and street games. We will conclude this study with two key considerations:

First, we have seen that what is behind some of the fundamental trends in game design are the social and cultural characteristics of the era. Therefore, in line with what McLuhan stated for his time, games and videogames can and should be analyzed as dramatic models of essential aspects of our lives, deeply rooted in the culture they form a part of.

Second, in verifying the usefulness of the analysis model presented here we have been able to show that the ludic structures and processes have—similarly to the narrative and visual composition structures—an authentic discursive potential, and the only thing that sometimes stops us from deeply appreciating the meaning level of games is that game science is not as developed as the narration, staging and visual communication sciences. Games have always been telling us something interesting about ourselves, about our world and our relationship with it; the problem is, simply, that until very recently we haven't bothered much to listen to them. Now is the time to learn the language in which games speak to us.

Desde su origen histórico, los juegos han planteado dramatizaciones sobre actividades fundamentales para la humanidad, como la siembra y recolección agrícola (juegos de mancala), la guerra (ajedrez) o la construcción (puzzles), pero los juegos más populares sobre un mismo tipo de actividad varían de forma significativa en función del lugar y la época a la que pertenecen. En este sentido, el análisis comparado entre juegos tradicionales y videojuegos puede aportarnos una mirada particular y valiosa para profundizar en nuestra comprensión sobre la cultura popular de nuestro tiempo. ¿Qué rasgos distintivos presenta en los videojuegos de estrategia la dramatización de la guerra, en comparación con el ajedrez?, ¿qué distingue a las principales metáforas videolúdicas sobre la actividad de construcción de los puzzles tradicionales?... El objetivo de este artículo es abordar este tipo de cuestiones, a través de un análisis comparativo de la significación de juegos tradicionales y videojuegos populares. Los fundamentos teórico/metodológicos del trabajo se encuentran en la Historia del Juego, la Teoría del Diseño de Juegos y la Teoría de la Significación del Videojuego. Los resultados revelan elementos distintivos significativos entre los juegos tradicionales y algunos de los videojuegos más populares, y permiten verificar el interés de un modelo de análisis concebido para este estudio. Finalmente, en las conclusiones se reflexiona sobre la relación entre la significación de los videojuegos analizados y aspectos distintivos de la cultura contemporánea.

==== 1. Introducción ====

1.1. Planteamiento

A mediados de los años sesenta del siglo XX, cuando el «football» estaba superando al «baseball» como el deporte más popular en los Estados Unidos, Marshall McLuhan ensayó una breve reflexión al respecto en un pasaje de «Understanding Media» (1964: 208-212). Según McLuhan, el cambio en las preferencias del público se podía explicar por un giro cultural: apuntó que el béisbol era un juego posicional y por turnos, con una discretización y jerarquización nítidas de las ubicaciones y funciones de los jugadores y, por tanto, se avenía bien al «gusto» de la sociedad industrial; en cambio, el «football» discurría a través de un juego más descentralizado y fluido, sin roles tan fijos de los participantes, que parecía congeniar mejor con los nuevos tiempos. La idea clave de McLuhan, tras esta pequeña reflexión, era que los juegos son modelos dramáticos alrededor de cuestiones fundamentales en nuestra vida psicológica, y como tales constituyen reflejos o reacciones culturales, íntimamente relacionadas con la sociedad en la que han surgido, o bien en la que han adquirido mayor popularidad (McLuhan, 1964: 208-209) (Egenfeldt-Nielsen, Heide-Smith & Tosca: 2008: 28-29).

Esta idea de McLuhan sintonizaba con las pioneras teorías antropológicas/sociológicas sobre el juego de Huizinga (1998) y Caillois (2001), pero, a pesar de las valiosas intuiciones de estos investigadores, el estudio de los juegos populares como fenómenos expresivos y de raíces profundamente culturales no empezó a tomar plena consistencia hasta la consolidación de la industria del videojuego, alrededor de los años noventa del siglo XX, en libros como «Video Kids: making sense of Nintendo» (Provenzo, 1991) y «Hamlet on the Holodeck» (Murray, 1997).

Más recientemente, la teoría de la significación del videojuego se ha ido desarrollando a través de tesis doctorales y trabajos de investigación como los de Frasca (2001; 2003; 2007; 2009), Sicart (2003; 2009a; 2009b), Salen y Zimmerman (2004), Maietti (2004; 2008), Bogost (2006), Ruiz-Collantes (2009) y Pérez-Latorre (2010), que han aportado diversos instrumentos de análisis sobre la relación entre las estructuras lúdicas (reglas de juego, estructuras estratégicas, dinámicas de «gameplay»: experiencia de juego) y el potencial discursivo del videojuego, manteniendo el foco centrado en la dimensión lúdica, es decir, tomando las estructuras lúdicas como elemento central del «lenguaje» del videojuego y dejando al margen o en segundo plano las dimensiones narrativa y de estética audiovisual, en tanto que estratos compositivos del videojuego no-específicos, menos distintivos del medio.

Así, desde la perspectiva teórica planteada, el objetivo de este artículo es llevar a cabo un análisis comparativo sobre la significación de juegos tradicionales y videojuegos populares. La hipótesis fundamental en la que se basa el trabajo supone retomar aquellas intuiciones de McLuhan: existen profundas relaciones entre el juego popular y la cultura/época de la que éste forma parte, que es posible revelar a través de un análisis de la significación del juego.

1.2. Mecánicas de juego universales

A lo largo del texto se plantearán cuatro análisis comparativos sobre juegos tradicionales y videojuegos que coinciden en la representación de un mismo tipo de actividad recurrente en el juego, una «mecánica de juego» en el argot del diseño de juegos. Más concretamente, una mecánica central de juego («core mechanic») es una acción o articulación de acciones del jugador (del personaje/jugador en el caso del videojuego) especialmente recurrente en el juego para provocar cambios de estado y conseguir objetivos (Sicart, 2008).

A partir del trabajo de los historiadores del juego, recogido y actualizado por Parlett (1999), es posible identificar cuatro mecánicas de juego universales en los juegos de tablero, que han pervivido a lo largo de la historia y han estado siempre presentes en los juegos de distintos lugares y culturas (Parlett, 1999: 8-9.). Estas mecánicas de juego universales son las siguientes: recolección; captura/caza; configuración; habilidad/carrera.

La «recolección» es una mecánica de juego propia del tradicional juego africano del mancala (una representación ancestral de la siembra y recogida agrícola), y también del juego de la búsqueda del tesoro, que tradicionalmente organizan los niños diseminando pistas alrededor de la casa. La «caza» o «captura» es la mecánica de juego de clásicos de la estrategia como el ajedrez o las damas, el juego del escondite, y también de juegos de puntería como el balón-tiro, el tirachinas o la diana. La «configuración» es la mecánica de juego característica de los puzzles, el Tangram, el Tres en Raya, el Solitario o el «Conecta 4», y también de los acertijos y adivinanzas, ya que en este tipo de juegos se ofrece al jugador una serie de pistas que éste deberá combinar (articular, configurar) de forma adecuada para poder descubrir la información oculta. Finalmente, la «habilidad/carrera» es la mecánica de juego característica de juegos de destreza, ritmo y/o habilidad atlética, como la rayuela, saltar a la comba o las carreras de sacos, así como también de juegos de tablero donde se representan carreras mediante tiradas de dados, como en el Backgammon o el Parchís.

Podemos considerar que estas mecánicas de juego universales deben corresponderse con algunas actividades fundamentales en la supervivencia y el desarrollo del hombre (Parlett, 1999: 8). En este sentido:

• La recolección se corresponde con la recogida y aprovisionamiento de alimentos: buscar frutas, recoger la cosecha, pescar, etc.

• La captura se corresponde con la caza y la guerra: cazar a otros animales y enfrentarse a enemigos, eliminándolos o bien neutralizándolos.

• La configuración se corresponde con la construcción: invención y montaje de instrumentos útiles, o bien construcción de viviendas y otro tipo de edificaciones.

• La habilidad/carrera se corresponde con la destreza física y la agilidad, también indispensables para la supervivencia y el desarrollo del hombre.

Así, a lo largo de la investigación nos disponemos a observar los contrastes más significativos entre los juegos tradicionales y determinados videojuegos populares en cuanto a la representación (indirecta, implícita) sobre el aprovisionamiento de alimentos, la caza/guerra, la construcción y el ejercicio físico.

====2. Método====

Los juegos tradicionales y videojuegos comparados en esta investigación tienen, como denominador común fundamental, una centralidad particularmente clara y relevante de una de las mecánicas de juego definidas anteriormente. Asimismo, nuestra selección de juegos tradicionales y videojuegos para los estudios de caso atiende también a una valorización sobre el grado de popularidad del juego y su éxito comercial en el caso del videojuego. Por añadidura, se establecerán comparaciones entre juegos y videojuegos que corresponden a un mismo género de juego (y que además, en términos de Wittgenstein, poseen un particular «aire de familia»), por ejemplo comparando el ajedrez con un videojuego sobre tema bélico del género de estrategia, en lugar de un «shooter». Así:

• Respecto a la representación del aprovisionamiento de alimentos, se comparará el juego tradicional de mancala con los videojuegos «Pac-Man» y «Katamari Damacy».

• Respecto a la representación de la guerra, se comparará el ajedrez con el videojuego «Starcraft».

• Respecto a la representación de la construcción, se comparará el puzzle tradicional con el videojuego «Tetris».

• Respecto a la representación de la actividad atlética, se comparará el juego de rayuela con los video-juegos de la videoconsola Wii.

Para preservar la coherencia en el estudio comparativo, se aplicarán las mismas variables de análisis a todos los juegos y videojuegos considerados. Para ello, se han adoptado y adaptado aquí siete variables de análisis extraídas de la tesis doctoral «Análisis de la significación del videojuego» (Pérez-Latorre, 2010). A partir de la investigación referida, se puede establecer que una determinada actividad representada en un juego o videojuego adquiere ciertos matices de significación fundamentalmente en función de los siguientes aspectos:

1) Acciones que componen la actividad. La significación de una de las actividades principales en este estudio (aprovisionamiento de alimentos, caza, guerra, construcción, habilidad atlética) puede variar sustancialmente en función de las (micro)acciones que componen dicha acción en el juego y en el videojuego. Por ejemplo, la actividad de «aprovisionamiento de alimentos» podría comprender, según el juego, determinadas (micro)acciones como «cultivar», «buscar», «pescar», «robar», etc.

2) Relaciones actividad-función. Asimismo, la significación de una acción o actividad de juego depende en gran medida de la función que le sea adscrita. Así, el uso del martillo cobra un significado muy distinto si se considera en relación con la función/efecto de «romper cristales» o con la de «construir una casa». En este sentido, observemos que una misma acción o actividad puede proyectar significaciones muy diferentes según la función/efecto convencional que posee en un videojuego, en comparación al que poseía en un juego tradicional.

3) Condiciones de realización de la acción (en el plano «real»). Una acción o actividad de juego poseerá también un particular matiz de significación según los principales criterios de éxito que se demandan al jugador para el cumplimiento de su función en el juego (nos referimos aquí a acciones «reales» del jugador y no a acciones representadas en la pantalla). Así, por ejemplo, la significación de la «caza» resulta muy diferente si se da, en un juego/videojuego, en relación con el requerimiento de habilidad analítica/reflexiva del jugador, o más bien se apela al uso de agilidad perceptiva y reflejos.

4) Decantación de la experiencia de juego hacia redundancia vs. variabilidad. Una experiencia de juego en pro de un determinado objetivo se puede revelar como un «camino único», redundante, para alcanzar el objetivo en cuestión, o bien suponer una alternativa más en el juego, entre muchas otras posibles. Ello proyecta también determinados rasgos de significación sobre la acción/actividad en cuestión, tal como iremos comprobando.

5) Oportunidades y riesgos. En particular, los juegos y videojuegos de estrategia se caracterizan por llenar de significación las acciones de juego a través de la vinculación de cada una de ellas a una determinada combinación de oportunidades y riesgos. Así, por ejemplo, la estrategia ofensiva en el fútbol se asocia a la oportunidad de conquistar «territorio enemigo» pero, al mismo tiempo, al riesgo de dejar «desprotegida» la propia «casa», y a la inversa respecto a la estrategia defensiva.

6) Sujeto vs. entorno. Una faceta fundamental de la significación del juego tiene que ver con la dialéctica entre «asimilación» vs. «acomodación» que Jean Piaget estableció en su psicología del aprendizaje (Piaget & Inhelder, 2007), acerca de las tensiones para encontrar una justa proporción entre la voluntad del «yo» y la adaptación al medio externo (entorno). Así, por ejemplo, la representación de la «vida social» en el juego de la casita de muñecas cobra un barniz de tono «dulce», «idílico», por el elevado grado de control del jugador sobre el desarrollo del juego, según sus apetencias (polo de «asimilación»), en contraste con las exigencias de adaptación mucho mayores en los deportes (polo de «acomodación»): reglas que imponen duras limitaciones, presencia de jugadores rivales, necesidad de entrar en competición, etc.

7) Espacios de actuación. Finalmente, la significación de una determinada acción/actividad puede variar también sustancialmente en función del tipo de espacio donde ésta se desarrolla, la forma del «terreno de juego».

A continuación se recogen los resultados más significativos que se desprenden de la investigación. En lugar de describir la aplicación de todas las variables en cada uno de los casos analizados, nos centraremos en las que resultan más relevantes en cada caso, aquéllas que arrojan más luz acerca de los aspectos distintivos fundamentales entre la significación del juego tradicional y el videojuego.

====3. Principales resultados del análisis====

3.1. La representación del aprovisionamiento de alimentos: Mancala vs. «Pac-Man» y «Katamari Damacy»

El «juego de las semillas» o «mancala» es el juego tradicional más popular en África y parte de Oriente Medio y Asia (sudeste y Asia central), y existen registros históricos del mismo desde los siglos VI-VII d. C. (Comas, 2005: 30). La variante de mancala más jugada en Europa es el «awalé». En su trasfondo simbólico, se trata de una representación de la siembra y recogida agrícola. El juego se practica en un tablero con dos filas de hendiduras, en el que los jugadores van pasando un determinado número de fichas (semillas, guijarros, habas) de un hueco al siguiente, de una en una. Si la última semilla del jugador en un movimiento de siembra cae en un agujero del adversario donde, como resultado, quedan 2 o 3 semillas, dicho jugador puede quedárselas: ha recogido una «cosecha». El objetivo del juego es recolectar el mayor número posible de semillas.

En el mundo de los videojuegos, casualmente una misma compañía, la japonesa Namco, ha sacado a la luz los dos videojuegos que de forma más evidente metaforizan el aprovisionamiento de alimentos: el popular «Pac-Man» (1980) y el videojuego «de culto» «Katamari Damacy» (1998). Como es sabido, «Pac-Man» consiste en el viaje de un come-cocos a través de una serie de laberintos, intentando «comer» todos los puntos de cada nivel al tiempo que evita a los fantasmas enemigos. Por su parte, «Katamari Damacy», extravagante sucesor de «Pac-Man» en el videojuego contemporáneo, plantea un surrealista «simulador» de escarabajo pelotero: el jugador controla una bola inicialmente pequeña en la que debe ir enganchando el mayor número posible de objetos y hacerla crecer hasta un diámetro determinado, en entornos cotidianos como casas, jardines, calles de la ciudad, etc.

Hay una diferencia fundamental en cuanto a la significación del «awalé» y sus principales «herederos» video-lúdicos, en relación con las (micro)acciones que componen la actividad metafórica del aprovisionamiento de alimentos. En el «awalé» dicha actividad se representa como un proceso que va desde la «siembra» hasta la «recogida» de la cosecha: tras realizar algunos cálculos, el jugador debe «sembrar» sus semillas y, después, recoger la «cosecha», pero en «Pac-Man» y en «Katamari Damacy» no se representa el aprovisionamiento de alimentos como un desarrollo progresivo, orgánico. Al contrario, el jugador juega tan sólo en la parte final de dicho proceso: el «consumo».

Por otro lado, una característica del «awalé» es que las «fichas» van pasando de un jugador a otro continuamente. En cambio, en «Pac-Man» y en «Katamari Damacy» los elementos de los que se va apropiando el personaje/jugador son de «otro» o de «nadie», pero en todo caso no concurre en estos videojuegos un proceso de intercambio o alternancia en la posesión de objetos, que sí se da en el «awalé».

En cuanto a las condiciones de éxito más características de estos juegos, para el jugador de «awalé» es fundamental el cálculo y un cierto cultivo del «equilibrio», ya que las jugadas que permiten recoger «cosechas» son aquéllas en las que el hueco no queda vacío ni con una sola ficha pero tampoco demasiado lleno (con más de tres fichas). Muy diferentes son «Pac-Man» y «Katamari Damacy», también a este respecto: en ambos, la «rapidez» toma el lugar del «cálculo» como condición de éxito fundamental: Pac-Man debe realizar hábiles carreras para evitar ser atrapado por los fantasmas y el protagonista de «Katamari» tiene en cada nivel un determinado límite de tiempo para poder alcanzar el tamaño demandado de la bola, una «espada de Damocles» que imprime un ritmo estresante a la experiencia de juego. Asimismo, en lugar del equilibrio cuantitativo del «awalé», en los videojuegos de Namco se prescribe la acumulación ilimitada, sea de puntos («Pac-Man») u objetos («Katamari»). Ambos videojuegos son prácticamente «símbolos» del consumismo compulsivo en la cultura popular, aspecto que alcanza el grado de hipérbole surrealista en el caso de «Katamari Damacy», donde el jugador puede acabar intentando «consumir» cabinas telefónicas, camiones y edificios.

Respecto al grado de variabilidad de la experiencia de juego, el contraste más significativo se da entre el «awalé» y «Katamari Damacy». Mientras el «awalé» sigue una dinámica esencialmente redundante y ordenada, donde las secuencias de cálculo, siembra y recogida se van repitiendo de forma similar y sistemática, «Katamari» se caracteriza por un «gameplay» muy imprevisible, fluida, siempre sorprendente. Esto es así porque los objetos que puede recolectar el jugador (desde hamburguesas hasta perros, pasando por extintores y helados) están diseminados de forma totalmente azarosa en el paisaje del juego, y el proceso de recolección de los mismos por parte del jugador tampoco responde a un orden rígido. Este estilo de recolección parece evocar la experiencia de recolección en la cotidianidad contemporánea, en la era digital. Gracias a la casi ilimitada capacidad de nuestros nuevos «almacenes» y «estanterías» digitales, ¿quién puede resistirse a «relajar» un tanto su criterio selectivo en la experiencia de recolección?... En este sentido, «Katamari Damacy» tiene mucho de divertida parodia lúdica sobre el nuevo estilo de recolección en la era digital.

En todo caso, si en algo coinciden los tres juegos es en una escasa diversidad de tipos de acción por parte del personaje/jugador: «cálculo», «siembra» y «recogida», en un caso, y «movimiento/carrera» más «apropia-ción/consumo», en los dos videojuegos. Sin embargo, mientras en el caso del «awalé» esto parece transmi-tir/promover cierta «constancia» o actitud «metódica», en los videojuegos de Namco, atendiendo al tono general de los mismos, más bien parece remitir a «obsesión», «monomanía», evocando la idea de «fiebre consumista».

3.2. La representación de la guerra: Ajedrez vs. «Starcraft»

Resulta difícil decir algo sobre el ajedrez que no se haya dicho ya antes en innumerables ocasiones. Se trata de uno de los grandes referentes de la cultura popular a escala universal, que proviene del Chaturanga indio, del siglo VII. Pero tal vez todavía podamos descubrir alguna cosa más sobre la identidad metafórica del juego si lo ponemos en relación con uno de sus sucesores más populares en el mundo del videojuego: el videojuego de estrategia y ciencia-ficción «Starcraft» (Blizzard, 1998), uno de los videojuegos para PC más vendidos de la historia.

El juego se ambienta en el siglo XXVI, cuando tres razas de distintos planetas luchan por la supervivencia y la supremacía en el universo: los Terran, humanos exiliados de la Tierra, los Zerg, una raza insectoide, y los Protoss, un pueblo alienígena humanoide con gran desarrollo tecnológico y extraordinarias capacidades psíquicas. Tomando el control de una de estas razas, el jugador debe intentar superar diferentes niveles de juego estratégico.

En relación con las condiciones de éxito en el desempeño del jugador, un rasgo esencial de «Starcraft» es la demanda de rapidez. «Starcraft» fue uno de los videojuegos que popularizó el juego de «estrategia en tiempo real», donde la «noble» pero también «rígida» imagen de la guerra por turnos, propia del ajedrez, desaparecía, y la rapidez en la toma de decisiones y la forma de llevarlas a cabo resultaba casi tan importante como los propios planes táctico-estratégicos.

Por otro lado, respecto a las acciones que conforman la guerra en el ajedrez, se trata de la representación de la guerra como un «cara a cara» directo y letal entre dos ejércitos, en una especie de «burbuja» idealizada donde ningún elemento externo o colateral a la batalla en sí misma tiene cabida. A la inversa, en «Starcraft» la guerra deviene algo más que una batalla: resulta clave para poder lograr la victoria el control y la explotación inteligente de los yacimientos de los dos únicos recursos naturales que quedan en la galaxia: el mineral «kristalis» y el gas «vespeno».

Así, la estrategia en «Starcraft» tiene que ver tanto con las batallas en sí como con el apoderamiento de las fuentes de energía que aparecen diseminadas en cada mapa de juego, hasta el punto de que lo que se supone que es un medio para otros fines (kristalis, gas vespeno) a veces prácticamente constituye la finalidad clave de la partida. Este rasgo típicamente videolúdico del juego de estrategia bélica no forma parte del ajedrez y, sin duda, presenta conexiones interesantes con el mundo contemporáneo, donde el control de fuentes de energía como el petróleo se ha convertido en piedra angular para la comprensión de las nuevas guerras.

Junto a la lucha por el dominio de los recursos naturales/energéticos, «Starcraft» se caracteriza también por otros añadidos de acciones respecto a las puras acciones de combate del ajedrez: estratagemas de «espionaje» para obtener información y carrera de desarrollo tecnológico.

Mientras el ajedrez es el paradigma de los juegos de «información perfecta», donde el juego pone a disposición de todos los jugadores toda la información y en condiciones de igualdad, esto resulta muy diferente en «Starcraft»: el jugador no logra extender su radio de visibilidad sobre el terreno de juego hasta que no realiza exploraciones o lanza naves-espía para intentar obtener ventajas informativas sobre los rivales. De este modo, los «ataques por la espalda» están servidos. Nada que ver con la transparencia informativa del ajedrez, donde naturalmente los contrincantes buscan sorprenderse el uno al otro, pero siempre con las «cartas boca arriba».

Por otro lado, respecto a la carrera de desarrollo tecnológico, en «Starcraft» resulta también crucial lograr evoluciones («upgrades») en las infraestructuras y el equipamiento de los soldados.

Finalmente, la idealizante igualdad en el potencial de los ejércitos enfrentados en el ajedrez resulta subvertida por completo en «Starcraft». En el videojuego de Blizzard, el jugador que controla más yacimientos de recursos naturales y que es capaz de explotarlos de forma más hábil, podrá formar un ejército mucho más poderoso que sus contrincantes. Las batallas en «Starcraft» a veces tienen un final cantado de antemano: un ejército puede ser tan poderoso que puede «aplastar» a otro en cuestión de segundos. La habilidad estratégica (en la batalla) queda así prácticamente ridiculizada en ciertas ocasiones: por más buen «general» que sea uno, no podrá ni siquiera plantar cara hasta que no comprenda que la guerra de «Starcraft» se libra también y sobre todo en otros ámbitos: en el control de las fuentes de energía, el acceso a la información y la carrera por la evolución tecnológica.

En definitiva, efectivamente la verdadera «guerra» de «Starcraft» tiene lugar antes y más allá del campo de batalla, allí donde, de hecho, se suele decir que tienen lugar las guerras contemporáneas.

3.3. La representación de la construcción: Puzzle vs. «Tetris»

Aunque ya desde principios de siglo se jugaba con puzzles de madera, la fabricación en serie de puzzles coincidió con el inicio de su uso para fines educativos (para enseñar geografía en las escuelas británicas), alrededor de 1962. Veintitrés años después, en 1985, un juego electrónico revolucionó el concepto de puzzle en el imaginario colectivo: fue «Tetris», del ingeniero informático ruso Alexey Pajitnov.

En su proyección discursiva, el puzzle tradicional y «Tetris» difieren ya en los primeros pasos del juego: en el puzzle, el jugador toma la pieza que desea y empieza a construir sin presión alguna, en cambio el «constructor» de «Tetris» se encuentra en un mundo desbocado donde no hay elección: las piezas no dejan de caer en una lluvia aleatoria incesante, y no es posible elegir cuál se prefiere colocar, la única alternativa es intentar retrasar la inexorable llegada del caos durante tanto tiempo como se pueda.

Otra diferencia fundamental entre ambos juegos radica en la definición del objetivo: mientras en el puzzle completar una («la») construcción significa la victoria, en «Tetris» no existe «una» construcción equivalente a la victoria, ésta no cobra una imagen definida en este sentido. En relación con ello, se observa un contraste entre la construcción entendida como «gran obra única», en los puzzles tradicionales, y la construcción entendida como «múltiples obras que se suceden de forma incesante y prácticamente inevitable», en «Tetris». Se trata de un contraste entre un cierto «romanticismo» del puzzle y un particular «realismo trágico» de «Tetris», donde el sueño del «orden final perfecto» del puzzle es una utopía y a lo que se aspira es, en todo caso, a mitigar el caos.

Dicha divergencia entre «romanticismo» y «realismo trágico» se ve acentuada por el hecho de que el jugador que construye un puzzle controla el factor tiempo a su antojo, mientras en «Tetris» la caída de las piezas cada vez a mayor velocidad obliga al jugador a un esfuerzo significativo de adaptación a una condición externa como es la presión temporal.

En definitiva, prácticamente a la inversa que en el puzzle tradicional, en «Tetris» la construcción no se representa como una actividad bajo control del hombre (el jugador), sino más bien como una fuerza desbocada que avanza a su antojo, una situación límite ante la que sólo caben cuidados paliativos.

Respecto a las condiciones específicas de éxito en el juego, recordemos que, para detener la llegada del caos en «Tetris», el jugador debe tener siempre mucho cuidado de ir frenando el crecimiento de las construcciones antes de que la cúspide se acerque demasiado al límite superior del espacio, ya que en tal caso se pierde la partida. Se trata de una cierta prescripción del principio de «crecimiento sostenible».

Finalmente, ambos juegos difieren también en cuanto al papel de la percepción visual como condición de éxito: por un lado, en los puzzles la «observación detallista» posee un valor fundamental; en cambio, en «Tetris» la visión detallada carece de relevancia y es el reconocimiento de patrones estructurales abstractos aquello que demanda más atención en la experiencia visual del jugador. Esto parece remitir a una dialéctica subyacente entre una visión global pero también abstracta (en «Tetris») vs. una visión local pero con mayor «proximidad» a la realidad empírica (en los puzzles tradicionales).

3.4. La representación de la actividad atlética: Rayuela vs. Wii

Hay muchos juegos tradicionales infantiles que promueven el ejercicio físico y de la destreza sin necesidad de orientar el juego a la caza y captura de jugadores adversarios. Son juegos de habilidad atlética, perceptiva y/o rítmica como las carreras de sacos, saltar a la comba, o el juego de rayuela.

Si hay una compañía de diseño de videojuegos que se ha interesado por transplantar este tipo de juegos tradicionales de calle al interior de las casas es la compañía Nintendo, en especial a través de su videoconsola Wii, con videojuegos como «Wii Sports» (Nintendo, 2006), «Wii Play» (Nintendo, 2006) o «Mario Kart Wii» (Nintendo, 2008).

De entrada, evidentemente, el cambio de contexto de este tipo de juegos, de la calle hacia el interior de casa, va unido a una cierta atenuación de la habilidad física como condición de éxito y una acentuación de la agilidad perceptiva y los reflejos del jugador, como actividades metafóricas respecto al esfuerzo físico del «avatar» que representa al jugador en la pantalla del videojuego.

Por otro lado, la integración del juego de habilidad física en el medio videolúdico ha permitido sumergirlo en mundos llenos de variabilidad y sorpresas, saliendo de los espacios cotidianos donde solían tener lugar los juegos tradicionales de habilidad atlética, las calles del barrio. Así, el juego de mécanicas de habilidad física se ha adentrado en el territorio de la «fantasía», desmarcándose un tanto del «realismo».

Asimismo, hay dos características emblemáticas en el diseño de los videojuegos de Wii que cabe destacar: el «aprendizaje transparente» y el «ajuste dinámico de la dificultad». En el primer caso, se trata de una facilitación del aprendizaje de las reglas del juego, apoyada en la comprensión intuitiva del jugador sobre el modo de manejo del wii-mando, gracias a la gran libertad de uso de esta interfaz con sensor de movimiento. En el segundo caso, se trata de un modelo de diseño de la dificultad de juego donde, en función de la habilidad demostrada por el jugador, el nivel de dificultad se amolda al mismo, de forma automática (Salen & Zimmerman, 2004: 222-223). Estos dos rasgos característicos del diseño Wii evocan, conjuntamente, una representación sobre el ejercicio físico/atlético de tono idealizado y, en cierto modo, «placentero/hedonista». En cambio, aunque juegos como rayuela, las carreras de sacos o las acrobacias en monopatín hayan sido tradicionalmente practicados por niños, no conviene pasar por alto que éstos suelen exigir al jugador la adaptación a reglas no-flexibles, características no-modificables del «terreno de juego» y, eventualmente, a la competencia de los rivales, sin contar con un solícito «ajuste automatizado de la dificultad» ni otros elementos de diseño en esa línea.

Finalmente, cabe añadir que en los videojuegos populares de Wii se ha asociado fuertemente el juego de habilidad física/perceptiva al consumo en familia o con amigos, a través de una línea de mercado denominada «party games» (Mario Party 8). Al estar este tipo de juegos especialmente concebidos para su uso en grupo, se deja en segundo plano la práctica de jugar en solitario, a favor de una concepción de carácter más «festivo» de los juegos de mecánicas de habilidad física.

====4. Consideraciones finales (discusión)====

Tal vez no resulte sorprendente constatar que la cultura contemporánea, fundamentalmente en las sociedades occidentales, presenta rasgos distintivos como las llamadas al consumo compulsivo, la acumulación de bienes, la rapidez en la resolución de tareas, el estrés, la fluidez sobre los órdenes rígidos, la priorización de los resultados sobre el proceso o la elaboración que lleva hacia ellos, el conflicto por el control de las fuentes de energía, el formidable desarrollo tecnológico, la importancia clave de la información y el acceso a la misma, la multiplicación de construcciones y el descontrol en el crecimiento de las sociedades avanzadas, el problema de la gestión sostenible del entorno, una visión «global» pero también más «abstracta» sobre la realidad que nos rodea, y el sedentarismo y la sedentarización del ejercicio físico. Sin embargo, lo que sí puede resultar sorprendente es comprobar hasta qué punto estos valores están presentes en los videojuegos más populares de nuestro tiempo, y de hecho constituyen sus principales rasgos distintivos en comparación con sus juegos antecesores en el juego tradicional: juegos de mesa y juegos de calle. Esto nos debe llevar a establecer dos consideraciones fundamentales para concluir este estudio:

En primer lugar, hemos comprobado que el caldo de cultivo que promueve algunas de las tendencias fundamentales en el diseño de juegos son los rasgos sociales y culturales distintivos de la época. Por tanto, en la línea que apuntó McLuhan en su día, los juegos y videojuegos pueden y deben analizarse como modelos dramáticos sobre aspectos esenciales de nuestra vida, profundamente enraizados en la cultura de la que forman parte.

En segundo lugar, al verificar la utilidad del modelo de análisis planteado hemos podido comprobar que las estructuras y procesos lúdicos poseen, a un nivel similar al de las estructuras narrativas o la composición visual, un auténtico potencial discursivo, y lo único que a veces nos impide apreciar en profundidad la dimensión significativa de los juegos es el menor desarrollo de la ciencia del juego, en comparación con las ciencias de la narración, la puesta en escena o la comunicación visual. Por así decirlo, los juegos siempre nos han estado diciendo cosas interesantes sobre nosotros mismos, sobre nuestro mundo y nuestras relaciones con el mismo; el problema era, simplemente, que hasta hace poco tiempo no nos habíamos preocupado mucho de «escucharlos». Es el momento de aprender el lenguaje a través del que los juegos nos hablan.
