This paper presents some thoughts about the evolution of numerical methods and the difficulties posed by their applications to solve real problems of everyday´s engineering. Some remarks on the mathematical and computational tools needed for the practical use of numerical methods are given, together with some best practice rules. Finally the limits and perspectives of numerical methods are discussed.
