Abstract

Thesis (MEng(TransportSystemsEng)--University of South Australia, 2006. Mixed traffic, which is the typical type of traffic flow in Hochiminh city and other cities in Vietnam, brings a lot of issues to a traffic system, such as traffic congestion, delay and road safety. In order to deal with such issues, studies of mixed-traffic flows at intersections, which are the most vulnerable locations in the traffic network, are needed. There are various methods that have been used in this kind of study, in which the methods using traffic simulation software such as aaSIDRA appears to be the most effective. This thesis is going to model a signalized intersection in Hochiminh City using aaSIDRA software, which has never before been used to simulate mixed-traffic flows, with high proportion of motorcycles, at intersections. Due to constraints of time, only one hour of traffic data obtained at one signalized intersection in Hochiminh City is used for modelling in this research. In the modelling process, the output results estimated by aaSIDRA will be compared with the measured values to find the most appropriate model for the intersection. The final model for the studied intersection will be found by applying a calibration process, of which different passenger car equivalent (PCE) values for motorcycles are used in the calculations. Finally, all the required results will be analysed and discussed carefully. The performance of the intersection will be evaluated by analysing measures of performance such as degrees of saturation, delays, queue lengths and movement speeds available in the aaSIDRA output. Some useful recommendations will also be given to improve the accuracy and reliability of the model.
